Overview

The Music MM program offered by Eastern Kentucky University engages graduate students in a variety of learning opportunities, providing a contextual understanding of the historical, stylistic, and theoretical aspects of music. Students will leave with the artistic, technical and collaborative skills to create, perform and teach a variety of music.

Our primary functions are to prepare music specialists for service in the public schools, to prepare students for careers in private studio teaching, concert performance, professional ensemble performance, teaching in colleges and universities, and other aspects of professional musicianship including the music industry.

Where Are Recent Graduates of the Program Employed?

Recent graduates of EKU's music program are employed in a variety of positions within the field of music.

EKU graduates hold positions teaching and conducting music in public and private schools, including P-12 and higher education settings.

Employment within the field of music industry, including positions with major music manufacturers and musical organizations.

EKU graduates can be found performing in professional symphonies and military bands throughout the country.

Accreditation

The National Association of Schools of Music, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education accredit our music degrees.

General requirements

Individuals interested in the MM program must apply and be admitted to both, the Graduate School and the EKU Department of Music.

Applicants must have a 2.5 overall undergraduate GPA or higher. If undergraduate GPA is less than 2.5, applicants must submit official GRE scores to be considered for Probationary Admission. Expected target scores on the GRE for Probationary Admission are 144 on the Verbal and 3.0 on the Analytical Writing sections.

Applicants must submit undergraduate transcripts.

All Master of Music candidates are required to complete the Music Theory and Music History Entrance Exams as part of the application process.
