Overview
You will develop your own critical fashion practice, allowing you to open up alternative, affirmative approaches that redefine what fashion means in our social, cultural and economic realms.
Exploring alternative forms of fashion
Alternatives are popping up left and right but have failed to question the fundamental workings of this toxic industry. Aren’t most of the new ‘green’ or ‘diverse’ initiatives geared towards easing our minds into guilt-free (fashion) consumption? Shouldn’t we instead fundamentally rethink the concept of fashion, clothes and its values?
Within the MA Critical Fashion Practices from ArtEZ University of the Arts, they believe in the possibility of multiple fashion systems and as such, we move outside of the constraints of fashion as determined by the fashion industry. Within the programme we relate to an anti-capitalist perspective, and therefore explore alternative, non-industrial modes and frameworks for making, doing, seeing and experiencing fashion.
After graduation
During the Master Critical Fashion Practices you build up a critical fashion practice and portfolio you can use in your professional life. It contains unique contexts and agendas, which will help in the professional world or when applying for the funding of projects. Once graduated, you are prepared for the complex reality of your role as a critical practitioner within the ever-changing field of fashion.
Programme Structure
Curriculum:
- The Master Critical Fashion Practices is a two-year MA programme that is structured around four semesters. It is a combination of both individual and collaborative projects.
- The first year (consisting of the first two semesters) is a combination between short and long-running projects.
- While working on several shorter group projects, the participant will simultaneously explore a personal approach in the longer running projects.
- Within the context of these projects, participants are facilitated in formulating, exploring, and refining personal research objectives under the guidance of a tutor and several guest tutors from within the course and practitioners from the field.
- During the second year of the course (the third and fourth semester) the participant works individually on their graduation project, again under the guidance of a personal tutor, several guest tutors from within the course, and practitioners from the field.
